African electric mobility markets are developing around motorcycles, three-wheelers, buses, bicycles, delivery vehicles, and locally adapted charging solutions.

In Kigali, SOLUTIONSplus worked with Ampersand on electric motorcycle taxis, Guraride on bicycle sharing, and BasiGo on electric buses. The activities combined demonstrations with policy support, charging, business models, gender inclusion, and development of an electric bus roadmap. In Dar es Salaam, project work focused on the operating characteristics of three-wheelers, locally appropriate electric vehicle prototypes, electric bicycles, charging, and end-of-life considerations.

UNEP’s programmes support electric mobility activities in countries across the continent, including Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, South Africa and the Seychelles. These experiences show that African pathways are likely to be shaped by public transport, commercial two- and three-wheelers and locally adapted business models rather than by private cars alone.
